Echeveria 'Melaco' is an attractive variety of Echeveria, famous for its fleshy, colorful leaves. This particular cultivar is distinguished by its warm shades of red-brown and green, often with more intense coloring on the leaf tips, giving it a distinctive and attractive appearance. The name 'Melaco' evokes molasses, alluding to the rich brownish coloring of the leaves.
Origin: Like all Echeverias, 'Melaco' comes from the Crassulaceae family and was selected and cultivated for its particular aesthetic qualities. Echeverias are native to semi-desert regions of Mexico, Central America and northern South America, but 'Melaco', as a cultivar, was developed by horticulturists.
Growth: Echeveria 'Melaco' exhibits moderate growth, forming compact rosettes that can reach an impressive size under the right care. Over time, it can also produce shoots at the base, allowing the plant to spread and form larger groups.
Flowers: 'Melaco' can produce flower stems bearing bell-shaped flowers, usually in shades of pink or orange. Flowering tends to occur in spring or early summer.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Some amount of direct sunlight is beneficial, especially in the morning, to intensify leaf colors. However, excessive exposure can cause burning or bleaching of the leaves.
Watering: As with other succulents, moderate watering is necessary. Allow the medium to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months.
Substrate: Well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or gravel to ensure good drainage.
Temperature: Tolerates a range of temperatures but must be protected from freezing. Prefers warm, dry conditions.
